The history of the bandana

Named after a Hindi word meaning “to bind” or “to tie,” the neckerchief became popular in the West as a way to absorb sweat and protect against dust.
A bandana is a square cloth, usually 55 × 55 cm, worn as a headscarf tied at the back of the head. Bandanas are traditionally worn around the neck or head for protection or decorative purposes.

In the Wild West, wearing a colorful bandana was socially associated with criminal status. This connotation stemmed from the fact that western outlaws used a triangular folded bandana to protect their face and not be recognized.
In the past, bandanas were not used as scarves in the hair, but were worn on the face because they were used to protect against dust and to absorb sweat. (Western movies often depicted the cowboy wearing bandanas, as many cowboys used a square scarf for protection).
