For the first time a cap with an umbrella was worn in baseball. Today it has become a popular fashion accessory. The history of the baseball cap, its way into fashion and current trends.
Originally, the baseball cap comes from sports. After years of wearing straw hats, in 1858 the Brooklyn Excelsior baseball team took to the field for the first time wearing a peaked cap. About 100 years later, in 1954, it became the official sportswear of the Major League.
The mainstream then picked up the sporty accessory. After hip-hop first discovered the baseball cap, more and more young people wore them on the streets – until the American cap found its way to Europe.
Here, the cap is not only an ongoing trend among young people, but also an integral part of the workwear of police officers and security guards. They not only protect against sun and rain – they can also be printed on so that security officers are immediately recognizable as such and employees of a company are also immediately recognizable and also advertise their company when wearing the caps.
The cap is a genderless accessory that can be worn in all sorts of variations in shape and color. It does not matter whether they are pulled deep into the face or put on the wrong way round, with the peak to the back. This is a wearing style that also comes from sports: In baseball, a protective mask on the face is part of the sportswear, which is why the cap could only be worn backwards because of the visor. Nowadays, umpires and fans still wear the classic baseball cap during games – but the players themselves now wear helmets to protect them during the game.
What makes the baseball cap so special is that it has now almost completely detached itself from its roots, the sport. Very few people have a cap at home that they only put on when they’re working out – or even playing baseball. Caps have become a fashionable, everyday accessory that we see on the streets, in the train – but also on the catwalk.
