The history of the sweater – Hoodie

The sweater is a piece of clothing that we can hardly do without next to the T-shirt and want to. The history of the sweater goes back to the middle of the 19th century.

The beginnings

In the 19th century people wore distinguished clothes. Preferred materials were linen or cotton. Men used to wear a double-breasted buttoned tailcoat. Ladies wore ankle-length skirts and tight tops. This is the beginning of the history of the sweater:
It was something new and the opposite of what was socially accepted at the time, so it was worn exclusively for work on the land or at sea. The classic sweater with a round neck was made of coarsely knitted wool. At that time it was inexpensive, warm and easy to work with. However, who invented on the classic knitted sweater is not known.
The term “Pullover” comes from English and literally means overcoat. The word has been recognized in the German vocabulary since 1817. Thanks to the material, sweating was pre-programmed and the name “sweater” established itself in the English-speaking world. Since 1950, the abbreviation sweater is very popular.
Over the years, the garment evolved: fine yarn and V-neck gave the piece a more elegant look. This is how the sweater became socially accepted. The finer knitted fabric quality from the well-known sweatshirt fabric gave the piece a new name: Sweatshirt.

Since 1930 there is the hoodie

In the 1930s began the era of the hooded sweater. The style and shape were based on the clothing of Christian monks in the Middle Ages. The inventor of the sweatshirt with hood (also called hoodie), was the American clothing manufacturer Champion. On their homepage it reads as follows: “The hoodie was designed and developed with practicality in mind, and was introduced as a garment for warming up or wearing on the sidelines outside of game time or during training sessions.” The hoodies were also produced for workers at frozen food warehouses in New York. It is still very popular in the hip-hop scene today!

The sweater today

There are many garments that are based on his cut. Today it comes in many different shapes, colors and materials. It suits everyone and everyone feels comfortable in it. Be it in the form of a turtleneck, hoodie, sweatshirt; knit, organic cotton or silk. Whether with U-boat neck, round neck or V-neck.
Today, people like to count the sweatshirt among the basics, as it is part of the “basic inventory” of a closet in contemporary fashion. The soft surface of the sweatshirt or hoodie is ideal for printing or embroidery.
Nowadays, it is impossible to imagine the fashion world without the hoodie. And it is no longer worn by most as a purely rebellious garment that embodies the coolness hip-hop culture of the 70s and 80s. Thus, the hoodie can be seen among all age groups and social classes.
